Mrs. McAffry is a Dork!

Maybe you weren't surprised at that realization, but I was! After listening to your Soundtrack Autobiography presentations, I realized that I am pretty out of touch with some of the music you all listen to. I tend to buy a CD every couple of weeks and wear it out until I get sick of it, so I never really listen to the radio. My husband and I decided that we would try to listen to the radio more often in an effort to hear a wider variety of music.

I will share with you one of my new favorite artists. He is Dave Barnes. "The power of his songs, equal parts depth and hooks, both thought-provoking and dance-inspiring" is unique (even if they don't actually inspire me to dance!). It is impossible to assign him to one genre; he fits in with folk, reggae, R&B, and I could continue. "I always want my songs to be served individually," Barnes says. "As we approach production, what I'm always the most conscious of is, 'is this song sounding like it needs to sound?' I do want the record to sound good, but I'm a lot more concerned with an individual song. That's all that anybody's listening to at one point anyway." So, apparantly he doesn't want to be stereotyped to any one style, and that is precisely why I enjoy his music. Every song on his record sounds distinct, individual. I encourage you to sample some of his music on iTunes. I think some of you would enjoy him. And if you really like him, he will be performing at the Bijou Theater on April 11!

Tell me about one of your favorite artists. Why do you enjoy him/her/them? Be specific in describing their genre or style since it is likely I might not know who they are. There is a catch this time; everyone must mention someone different.

I'm pretty much into so many different kinds of music its so hard to pick a favorite artist. I love old stuff like lynyrd skynyrd and I love jazz and big band. One of my favorite genres is really hard to put into a catagory. I love Death Cab For Cutie, Patrick Park, and Jason Castro (who is on American Idol Right Now So vote for him). I dont really know what they would be under but I also LOVE Teddy Geiger He is one of my all time favorites. But as far as bands go Red Hot Chili Peppers is my fave there. I love music. Its like what my life revolves around so its so hard to pick just one.

I am in love with country music so I would have to say that Keith Urban is my favorite artist. His songs are just so much like the everyday things that happen just put into words.

I like all kinds of music, from rap to country. If I had to choose any artist it would have to be Tupac. He raps about the struggles on the streets. His music just speaks to me. All his life he was told he wouldn't do anything, but he grew up in a hard city filled with drugs and crime, to become one of the best rappers of all time. His music pumps me up before a game or inspires to do something great. Tupac is the greatest man alive or dead which either one you believe.

I'm not sure I have a definite all-time favorite artist, because who I like kind of changes from time to time, but right now I have been listening to Blake Lewis's cd alot. It's pop but with an electronic and rock influence in it, and I love it because every song is different than the next, but they still flow together.

Other artists I really like right now are Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jason Mraz, and Panic at the Disco. I'm always looking for new music to listen to so I will be sure to check out Dave Barnes on iTunes.

My favorite musician or band is either David Bowie, Coheed and Cambria, Janis Joplin, or System of a Down. They all pretty much fit into the rock genre but they are different types of rock. David Bowie and Janis Joplin would be old school rock and Coheed and Cambria, and System of a Down would be contemporary rock. None of them however are the rock that you would hear on Star 102.1 because sorry to offend but 102.1 is not rock it is way too poppy.

My favorite artist is Madina Lake. They are more of a punk-rock, rock type band. I played their song, "Now or Never" when we did our soundtracks in class. This band produces songs that seem to relate to my life.

I like all kinds of music, but my favorite group would have to be Three Days Grace. They sing about different experiences I can relate to. They would be considered a rock band and I would love to go to one of their shows, but maybe when they come back to town!

I am currently into country music. My favorite group in this genre is Rascal Flatts. Their music, like many other country artists, focuses on life, freedom, and love. One of their songs, "Life is a Highway", means a lot to me because it applies to my life. The genre of music mainly focuses on what is in this song. If you have not taken the time to listen to this group then i deeply encourage you to do so.

I love music its a big part of my life and it is hard to just pick one group or artist. If I had to choose just one it would have to be Garth Brooks he is a country music star. All of his songs I have been listening to since i was in pre-school. So he would have to be my all time favorite

Wow suprisingly no one said metal, well that is my choice simply because I am an active person and I like up beat music that has some movement to it. Mly favorite metal band is slipknot hints all the slipknot shirts i wear to school.

I love Carrie Underwood. She is a country singer, and, actually, I seldom find interest in country music, but I love her lyrics! I can relate, in some way to almost all of her songs, because of the words. She definitely puts alot of thought into what she is singing about, unlike many rap songs(not that I don't like rap. I think Tupac is great, too).

I love music. My life is mostly about music ever since I started playing guitar. My favorite genre would have to be country. I love Little Big town they have a great harmony and seem so down to earth. They sing about living in the boondocks and love. Most of thier songs are up beat so I love to dance to thier songs. I love redneck songs so if you ever ride in my car you will be hearing some Hank Williams Jr. I also love 80's music like Journey and The Eagles. I like all kinds of music though.

I would have to say my favorite artist would be Taylor Swift. She is so talented, and she really has come far in the country music world. Being a teenager herself, her style is enjoyed by many teenagers and things that go on in their lives. I enjoy Taylor because she brings out the fun during highschool in her songs.

Well since Erika took Keith Urban from me (I'm determined to marry him one day for those of you that haven't heard)I would have to say that Jill Scott is one of the many favorite artists that I have at the moment.. Her words are deep and soulful, but at the same time wild and carefree. She is the person who inspired me to live my life like its "Golden" because for a while there I didn't. For those of you who haven't heard her try listening to some of her stuff.. But beware. You must have a mature outlook on many subjects that she speaks about.

Well my favorite artist would have to be Lil' Wayne. He can rap with no problem. He freestyles every song he makes. Lil' Wayne is probably one of the people I look up to in rap music. Everytime A Lil' Wayne song comes on I usually know it. I have every Lil' Wayne song on my Ipod. I listen to his music when I'm n ot writing and new songs, recording, or even doing homework. I love rap music. There are many other rap artists that I like to listen, but they are not my favorite. One day I hope I get to do A song with Lil' Wayne. I think that would be cool. Also, Hurricane Chris is another artist I like ,but not my favorite. Being A rapper is the life that I will achieve, listening inspires me to be the best.

I love to listen to Country music. It just has a way of touching your heart. My favorite singer would have to be Miranda Lambert. She sings about different subjects. One of my favorite by her is called Kerosene. It just shows how mad girls get and what they can do! She burns down all her memories of the guy who broke her heart and shows that we all can move on! I love to listen to her music!

Music is a big passion of mine and as I see also for many of my peers . I like just about every genre. The reason for that being I am really more concerned with the actual lyrics of the song rather then just a good beat. My favorite music artist for today would have to be Fergie. I find it very funny that she was on the feminist slides today. The reason I like her is for one of course the lyrics in her songs are great (and I am not referring to "My Humps" but songs like "Clumsy" are very good.) I love her songs because most of them I can relate too. Another reason I like her is because she branched out from being part of The Black Eyed Peas and is now a strong women standing on her own two feet and is very successful. My favorite music artist will change with the seasons but my love for music will never fade.

Okay so as soon as you said we had to pick our favorite artist I automatically thought of Brad Paisley, but been then I was afraid someone had already chose him when you told us we had to pick different artists. Luckily I am ahead of a few people by posting early so I beat everyone to him.
Brad Paisley is by far the best singer ever. I don't enjoy a lot of country music but I absolutely love Brad. He actually won at the Country Music Awards, Artist Of The Year.
I would name my favorite song of his but I would probably name every song on all of his CD's. Thats how much I enjoy his music. My Aunt Mary is Vice President of CMT (the TV station) and she was generous enough to get me way up front at the Brad Paisley concert just a month ago. I'm telling you Mrs. Mcaffry if you haven't heard any of his songs, which I highly doubt, you need to sprint to the Walmart right now and buy the CD. Im not kidding.

Well, if i had to pick a artist that appeals to me it would probably be Linkin Park. The style of music appeals to me and the majority of his songs' lyrics appeal to me.The songs stand out from other songs in a way I really can't describe. I have never heard of Dave Barnes. From what you describe of him i am getting the image of say, Akon. Ha ha ha please don't take that offensive.

I love all kinds of different muscic. I listen to a song depending on what kind of mood I'm in. If I'm in a bad mood I often listen to country or a sad song. My favorite artist is probably Lacrae. He is a Christian rap artist. His songs sound just like regular rap, but without the explicit lyrics. He speaks about life and the choices you make when you have God in your life and the importance of having Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

stormib said...

Oh my goodness I can't believe nobody has talked about Superchick! Even though they sound oltra girly their really for both genders. They are a super fabulous christian rock group that put inspiration into every lyrick of their music.Defintley a group in which you would want to listen to when you need to scream and yell and dance around!!

So, has anybody listened to Dave Barnes yet? What do you think? And yes AshleyC, I do enjoy Brad Paisley. He is such a clever songwriter; I used one of his songs on my wedding CD!

My favorite band is Relient K! They have been my favorite artist since I was in about 6th grade. Relient K has a wide variety of music but they are mostly like a punk rock kind of sound and they even have alot of slow songs. The best thing about them is the way there songs lift up praise and honor and glory to Jesus Chirst!

chelsey_b said...

Well, I believe Nick took Linkin Park from me. They are my favorite and I did drive 16 hours in one day to see them live. We got back at about 7:00 in the morning then I came straight to school...

Anyways, I'm going to have to pick my second fave which is Bullet For My Valentine. I'm going to see them in Georgia on March 24! I like rock, metal, heavy metal, & some punk every now and then. I probably don't look like someone that would like those genres of music but that just proves what we've kind of been talking about in class, "You can't judge a book by it's cover!"

Joshb said...

Well I dont particularly have a favorite genre of music I just listen to it all. Im a lot like my Zack C. I just listen to songs that match the type of mood Im in. Well everyone has said really great artists and I don't really have a favorite artist, but if I did it would have to be Shania Twain because she is such an insperation to me. If it wasn't for the whole age thing and the fact that she doesnt even know me I would marry her.

Marvin B. said...

My favorite artist is actually a composer. I am certain that everyone has heard of him at some point in their lives. He is Ludwig Van Beethoven. I love the balance in his music. It is also very smooth, which is something that really appeals to me. Many people I talk to think that this is odd. It may very well be but, I think that music has a very powerful affect on your mood. Listening to Beethoven's music actually calms me down a great deal, and I think that things you do for enjoyment should do just that. That is why I have strayed away from more modern music forms.

Evanescence is my favorite band. They are a rock band but also have some classical influence. Amy Lee, the lead singer and pianist, likes classical music and they put that in their songs sometimes. They even have two songs with Mozart's Lacrimosa in them. One of my favorite things about Evanescence is that some of their songs are almost hard rock but then they also have songs that are just vocals and a piano.

Tyler H. said...

My favorite artist is Adam Sandler. He is hilarious. The genre would be comedy. I like his songs because they are very funny and make me laugh. He sang in the wedding singer and on many videos on Youtube.

I listen to different kinds of musis but I would have to say my favorite band is Kutless. They are a christian rock band and I have listened to their music for a long time.

My favorite arist is Avril Lavigne. Her music is so meaningful and I love it. All of her songs have a moral to it, and it seems as though most of her songs relate to my life. She is a wonderful artist and i love her music.

RachelY said...

Well I've read alot of great bands. I love so many of them! Three Days Grace was already taken unfortunately.

I am a big fan of rock and 90's music I guess I'm not sure what the categories are. I definatley can't pick just one band, but I absolutely love Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, 30 Seconds to Mars, Faber Drive, Good Charlotte and Hinder. I listen to specifically these bands all the time and I love their songs. I have listened to some of them since I was 5 or so. I just love their music and their choice of lyrics the best. These bands are a big part of life. You should definately check them out if you have never listened to them.

I really like all kinds of music. My favorites though are Rap, R&B, and of course country. I don't like classical or anything though. Taylor Swift is probably my favorite singer at the moment. I'm hoping to see her in concert in April. I also really like Casting Crowns and Relient K, but just driving around I normalled listen to Rap. My girlfriend, Logan is also REALLY obsessed with Dave Barnes. You are the only two people I think though in the world who have heard of him. He's not too bad from what she forces me to listen to of him. I like his song "Until You" the best. She is going to his concert in April with Kacey so maybe you will see them there.

If i had my favorite musical group would probably have to be Nickleback. They would probably be classified under rock. I like Nickleback because they are a band that has been around for a while and still are going strong. They have great music that can go from a sad song into one that is upbeat and makes you wanna turn it up. Music is definitely a big part of my life. Listening to music is one thing that I have to do every single day. I love music!

erind said...

I just knew when Mrs. McAffry said that everyone had to choose different artists that someone would have picked John Mayer, but they didn't!-which is very good for me. I have been obsessed with him way before anyone ever heard of him. We're actually engaged. It's a secret engagement though. As soon as I turned on the computer before I even read the blog I had put his cd in. I really can't even hardly enjoy a song unless the lyrics are good, and John Mayer easily has the best lyrics I've ever heard. That's why we're in love and engaged (secretly). I really love to listen to someone who can put their words together in a way that is both intelligent and aknowledging of emotions. He really has a way with words. And my heart. His lyrics are kind of what I try to achieve in some of my writing, only I can't sing...

AshleyZ said...

Well of course Rachel Y. would pick Third Eye Blind, my favorite band. But it's ok because we are basically like sisters so it's not surprising that we like the same exact music. I almost like to live in the past because I absolutely love 90's music. Anyone who went through my ipod could make that assumption almost immediately. Another band that that I love, that I noticed wasn't used by anyone, is Dashboard Confessional. They are more of an alternative band. They write some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Their music is very relaxing to me and I listen to them all the time. Most of the time, I listen to them mainly because I feel like they sing about a situation I might be going through. Basically, their music and lyrics relate a lot to my life. Their songs range from acoustic, laid back songs, to somewhat fiery, heart-warming songs. Mainly, I just love that they are so laid back and their music comes from the heart.

I was actually pretty excited to see that you listened to Dave Barnes, because I can confess that I also love his music. I find it very soothing and like Dashboard Confessional, I'll listen to Dave on occasion when I want to relax.

my Favorite band would have to be a folk rock band called Iron and Wine. THey are fuse bluegrass, blues and acoustic to create their unique and soothing sound. Iron and Wine is the band I listen to when I need to relax. I played one of their songs, when I did my soundtrack presentation, called Weary Memory, it's just one of their many amazing songs.

I love just about every type of music that you could think of JUST ABOUT but right now I really like seether, three days grace, and natasha bedingfeild. This would be my favorite ne artist but my heart truelly belongs to motown and the tempations!

Well, I'm dissapointed to see someone has already put Taylor Swift, she's absolutely my favorite artist and has been for awhile now. And Keith Urban is probably the next one down, he's taken also.

So my next favorite would have to be Bethany Dillon. She's a very talented song writer and guitar player. She would probably go under Christian and accoustic. I love her voice and all of her songs relate to struggles in most people's lives. I've liked her since around the seventh grade. I love listening to her music. Even though Taylor Swift is my all-time favorite since she writes all of her own songs.

And Dave Barnes is a favorite of mine also. My favorite songs of his are "Until You" and "Nothing Fancy".

I'd like to start my comment with a thank you. to all of you who put 6 artist in your comment. my favorite of all time is a very close contest. very close. and i will put my second in parethathese to lower the amout of confusion. Number one The BEATLES. not only are they the greatest band ever they have influenced many of todays artists. so i owe my thanks th them for paving the way to better music. Second place is (jimmy Buffet) but hes like .001 percent behind the beatles.

Music would have to be one of my favorite topics. I love everything from AC/DC to Colbie Calliat! My favorite artist would with out a doubt be John Mayer. He writes some of the greatist songs i have ever heard; they are like poems of life, your body, friends, family, just about anything! John's music has a way of relaxing me as well as making me just want to smile! His songs, "Your Body is a Wonderland," and ,"Daughters" have got to be some of the most beautifully writen songs. They describe UNDESCRIBABLE feelings (if that makes sense). He has been blessed with a wonderful talent! John Mayer to me would be considered, R&B mixed with POP. If you haven't taken the time to really listen to his music I highly recommened it!

I listen to just about everything but one of my favorite bands is called Starfield. They are a soft rock Christian band and thier music always leaves me in a better mood than when I first turned on my stereo.

I honestly didn't take the time to read eveyone else's blog and figure out who has already been said. That being said i know for a fact no one else has discussed this artist. Andy Mckee is one of my favorite musicians. He plays the acoustic guitar in a style all his own. His songs lack vocals, but he makes up for it using his unique slap guitar style. In case you ever feel like listening to him, his best 2 songs are rylynn and drifting.

Oh my gosh, it's the middle of summer and I'm on here. But I was reading over some posts and saw this one and just had to reply! First off, Dave Barnes is amazing. You should definitely listen to Matt Wertz or Jack Johnson. Their music is good for any mood you are in. Dashboard Confessional has already been taken, but they are another favorite of mine. Really, I'll listen to anything, except country and metal. Anything you can sing, dance, and go crazy to.
