My favorite character in the Grapes of Wrath was probably Ma. I like how she kept herself together throughout the entire novel, and even though her family and herself faced plenty of hardships, she still stayed by their side and kept them spirited and helped them move on.

My favorite character would have to be Ma because even throughout all the terrible happenings that they have to live with and all the tough times they go through she still manages to keep herself as well as her whole family (which isn't that small) together.

I agree with what has been said. I admire and respect the character of Ma greatly. However, i would have to say my favorite character was Jim Casy. From the begining of the novel, discovering his religious struggle and decisions, he became easy to relate with. He is the Christ-like figure and is very supportive. Through out the novel Casy demonstrates admirable traits when he expresses his opinions and stands up for what he believes. He died with pride standing up for something he thought was worth dying for, leaving a message.

Grandpa is my favorite character. Grandpa represents the spirit of the farmer being run out of his own house. He has mixed emotions about leaving his land, but knows that he must leave other wise he may be killed.

Everyone has made excellent points about Ma, and she's brilliant. Although, I would have to say my favorite character is Tom Joad.
He may have the qualities to be violent, but he was also trandsformed into a great man. Tom's philosophy early on was to seize the day or "carpe diem", but he later realized that he should be commited for bettering the future. I believe that everybody has those exact thoughts. When we are young we have it in our minds that we are invincible and nothing can bring us down. We don't care what anyone says, and we live for us. That's a great thing to hold on to through life, but you can't just live in the moment. You have to think about where you'll be in ten years if you continue to live the way that you do. How will you earn a living and etc.. As we get older we realize we need to settle down and start thinking about how we want to end up. How we want to be remembered. How we want our children, and our children's children and so on and so on to look up to us .
I feel like he reprents that in each of us along with many other aspects, but that's my perspective.

Jim Casey, definitely. He is a man who has decided to go his own way. He leaves being a preacher because of what he believes. While I disagree with some of his new religious ideas, I strongly admire his free will and his strength in what he does believe. He is the first person we see who really acts against the injustice of the migrants plight. He is willing to fight for what he believes in. One thing I can not stand is injustice. It is something I cannot ignore, and something I feel should be fought against(even if I have to do it myself). Jim decides that he has been called to action and he answers the call, to death. Many of the people who are mentioned in history are people who fought against what they saw as wrong. Joan of Arc, Charles the Great, William Wallace, even George Washington. Jim Casey is an image of these people. He being the Christ figure, we see Jesus dying for what he was in Jim dying for the cause he thought was right. He attacked the policeman as Jesus attacked the vendors on the Temple entrance. I take Jim Casey as a model of the person I would like to become, a person who fights for what is right. One thing that history repeats is that the people who are fighting for what is right and just, usually win. These people have a hunger that keeps them persistently fighting till justice is done.

My favorite character is Tom Joad. I agree with Emily's remark about his change and his desire for a better future, which I think is his best quality. He also plays an important role by doing what he does for Ma because it adds to her determination, which in addition to the families determination.

My favorite character, without a doubt, is Jim Casy. I agree with what Natasha said. Casy went through a major change throughout the novel. He went from being a preacher to being lost, trying to make sense of his beliefs and find the way that is right for him. He also made a sacrifice to save Tom, when he got himself put in jail. While in jail, he came to a more definite idea of his beliefs. After he gets out of jail, he begins to practice what he believes, and is willing to stand up for it. He does, and he dies a martyr's death, giving up his own life to help people better understand and accept what he feels is right.

I also agree with what Andrew said, injustice is unacceptable. I feel that if you so strongly believe in something, there isn't another choice besides fighting to protect it. That is what Jim Casy did, which shows a great amount of courage, along with the amount of change he went through in the novel.

My favorite character in The Grapes of Wrath would definitely be Ma. She has a fierce love for her family and I admire her determination. Ma transforms from being a silent but very present rock for the family to lean on, to an unstoppable force with one goal: the survival of her family.

Jim casy is my favorite character in the Grapes of Wrath. He is passive throughout the book but finally gives way to his beliefsin the form of leading a revolt against the oppressors. Even though he is no longer a preacher he seems to have kept many of his moral values and i respect him for it.
