Favorite Word

I have to give credit to AlexW for inspiring this post. I overheard her talking today as she was working on vocabulary, and she said her favorite word is euphemism. For those who haven't just learned what it means, it is simply substituting an indirect phrase for something that might otherwise be harsh or blunt. For example, you might say someone "didn't exactly tell the truth" instead of saying he/she "lied." Or a car salesman might offer to sell you a "pre-owned vehicle" instead of a "used car." I must admit that I am a fan of the word myself, and even more, I enjoy using euphemisms in my daily speech.

So, back to the favorite word thing. My two favorite words are cacophony and patina. Cacophony means a harsh combination of sounds You could use it to describe the sounds in the hallway during class change! I think I just like this word because it is fun to say. The word patina describes the look that an object with age often develops. So, instead of an object appearing bright, shiny, and new, it has become worn and weathered with age. I enjoy this word because I prefer to decorate with things that have developed character and patina over time instead of something that looks freshly purchased from the store.

Your turn. What is your favorite word and why?

What? No one has commented on Mrs. McAffry's "favorite word" blog.

I guess I'll start it. My favorite word is probably envisage. Two reasons why I like this word. First, I like saying it. En-vis-age. Second, its meaning is to establish a specific mental picture in your mind, which I believe is very important when reading a book.

This might sound a little weird but my favorite words are aluminum and cinnamon because they are hard to say for a lot of people. I think it's funny whenever a group of people are trying to say the words and a select few are having a really hard time with it.

My favorite word is probably nonchalant, meaning casual or just cool. Pretty much only because its so much fun to say, but you can also use it in your everyday vocabulary.

And you know what's fun? Looking at the time that people posted their comment. Jake, shouldn't you be asleep at midnight?

So I'm super confused about this whole blog deal. I don't know which one to respond to, so I'll just comment all of them and surely I'm bound to get it right eventually.

Favorite words? That's really hard. I feel like I have many, but I guess I can narrow it down.

I love the word narcissistic. Its nice to be able to call someone something other than conceited. And just to let everyone know, I first heard this on America's Next Top Model. I really just like vocabulary in general so I'm super excited about this.

I have many words that I just love to use. One of the words I find myself using most often is detrimental. It is a word that describes something that causes harm or damage. I adore using it; especially when I am talking about tests affecting overall averages. Only one bad thing occurs when using this word. I have to be very careful because I want to use it all the time. Therefore, I use it in the wrong context, and I get really annoyed with myself because as soon as I say it, I am like "Ahh! That was wrong."

My favorite word is tenacious. Its fun to say and it describes the way many sports teams are not easily pulled apart.

My favorite word?

I would have to say my favorite word is phenomenon.

It is really fun to say and it is something you can use in your everyday conversations!

Hmmmm my favorite word....
My favorite word is probably indeed. I like it cause instead of just saying yes, or I agree, you can say indeed! It makes you sound so much smarter, and plus not a lot of people use it. It's just fun to say!

AbbyP said...

Well, my favorite word would probably have to be sporadically because you rarely ever get to use. The word means every once in a while. It is quite fun to say it when you are in a quick conversation, too!

My favorite word is ludicrous. I like this word because it means crazy, fun, and ridiculous. Which is pretty much life.

I see that everyone is using big and complicated words, but my favorite word is simple. Really, my favorite word is simple, because i love when things are simple. It keeps life free of complications.

AlexW said...

My favorite word is euphemism, like Mrs. McAffry already said. I like this word because when you say it you sound sophisticated. Also, i can say things that are negative and make them sound positive. Oh yes and i would like to say i like houstons word because it is a rapper if you didnt know.

My favorite is epitome. It means the heart or core of something. I just like to use it and all the words that are spawned from it epitomize. I'm glad that I thought of it today because I knew I had a favorite word, but I couldn't remember it at the time, but then I did. Whew. Close one.

Ok, favorite word. I guess I would have to say undulating. Its kinda like during an earthquake when the ground is moving in waves and it looks all cool but is very destructive. There's also undulating greens in golf. Those are tricky cause the putts can go any different direction. But its just a cool word to say.

I have two favorite words. Actually, I only had one until I was reading the comics today and found another. So my favorite words are magniloquence and eschew. Magniloquence basically means pompous speech. I learned this word on freerice.com, and I think it's cool to know a big word that you can pronounce! Eschew is the word I just learned today, and it means to avoid. It's another vibrant verb, Mrs. McAffry!

My favorite word is gargantuen. Ever since I heard my fourth grade teacher use it to describe an extremly tall tree, I have used it almost every day. It is an eccentric word, but it is also fun to say!

So this may sound wierd, but my favorite word is copious. It means a large amount. I just love saying it. Try saying it ten times fast; you will either sound really cool, or like a chicken.

My favorite word is realm which means kingdom or royal domain. It may not be the biggest or most sophisticated word, but it is by far my favorite. It makes me think of a majestic castle which I use to dream of when I was little, so I guess it just stuck.

My favorite word is effervescent, it means enthusiastic. It describes me in every way possible. I try to be in the best mood at all times.

My favorite word is zany because it is close to my name. It means crazy.

The hardest word for me to remember pronounce correctly is "Courteous" I always pronounce it Court "chus," so that is my least favorite word. I don't really have a favorite word, but I do like Patina, that seems like one that will stick in my mind, thanks Mrs. McAffry ^_^

AmandaP said...

My favorite word is derogatory, meaning to lessen or ones value or to make a harmfull comment. Why? Well, a while ago, i said that word to a guy in my class. His reaction was,"yeah i know that word its like a sentence or something." So, knowing that word makes me feel a little more intellegent than the average. Yeah, the word is crazy, hard but believe it or not, the number of people that can use it correctly is lower than i expected.

My favorite word is outlandish, which means foreign or not known! I just think that it is a weird word and kinda fun to say!!

Caitlin Lewis said...

Oh my goodness! I absolutely adore the word betwixt. It is so much cooler to say "My jelly is *betwixt* two pieces of bread," instead of "My jelly is *between* to pieces of bread." See? You would just sound so intelligent when you say that, especially when people do not know what you are saying! That is the best part!

My favorit word would have to amenable.I heard this word when I was little on Legally Blonde. I thought it made the lead character sound smart so I started using it. I have heard the word means agreeable or open to discuss. The dictionary describes it as liable to be brought to account.

I would say my favorite word is nostalgia, or reminding of home. It does its job well because every time I remember simpler times of cornbread and gravy. It also goes good in titles. For example, "Nostalgia, Memiors of a Super Mario World."

My favorite word is probably masticate, which means "to chew." One of my favorite hobbies is eating, so of course I would have to find a good word to describe it.
After all, doesn't it sound much better to say, "That garlic bread pizza I masticated on last night was astounding" (astounding is also one of my favorites), then just saying, "I ate that."

My favorite word is intriging and its just another word for interesting. I like to use cause people always say im interesting so i tell them that im intriging cause it sounds better.

Well my favorite words are disgusting which means nasty or sickening, also ferociously which means angry or bold, and celestial which means heavenly or God-like. These are my favorite words because they are fun to say, and all have completely different meanings. They can also be used to describe things in everyday life.

I actually have two favorite words. My first favorite word is spontaneity, because it pretty much describes how my mind works. I don't always say what my mind is thinking for that particular reason. My second favorite word is cantankerous because it's a word that describes something that can't be held down, and it also describes me and my friends (yes, I learned this word on free rice!).

I absolutely love the word avoirdupois which simply means weight. It’s such a wonderful word to sit and pronounce over and over. Plus it makes heaviness sound prettier too! “Lia’s avoirdupois broke the seat.” See what I mean!

My favorite word is lovely. It can be used to describe many different things...almost anything. I use it all the time

My favorite word would have to be pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, which is a microsopic lung disease that is caused by sulfaric particles from a volcano. Ok seriously, that is not my favorite word. It's just fun to say and see how people react to it. My favoite word is probably facetious, which means not meant to be taken seriously or literally. This is my favorite word because it has all the vowells in order and it sounds smart.

My favorite word happens to be visage wich means face. I came across this word wathing one of my favorite movies(try to guess the movie from the quote). One of the main carachters opening line from the movie was,

"This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the “vox populi” now vacant, vanished."

Visage was the only word i realy caught when i heard this so it pretty much stuck with me.(And btw if you couldn't guess the movie it was V for Vendetta)

My favorite word is betwixt. I just like the way it sounds...like instead of saying between you would say, she is standing betwixt the boys. I just love the word and when you say it, it makes you sound very smart!

Michelle Heatherly said...

My favorite word would be oxymoron which is a description of something but it doesn't really describe it. For example "Jumbo shrimp" which is a oxymoron because shrimp are little but the name has jumbo in it so it doesn't really describe it at all or "vaguely specific" to be vague is to not give many details or hints but specific is very detailed so they contridict eachother.

My favorite word would have to be procure, which means to obtain. As in, "I obtained a Capri Sun from Lucas." or "The gorilla procured a banana." It's so much better than just saying you 'got' something.

I also believe that ownership can be transfered if you say 'yoink' when you take it.

frankP said...

No wait.
I meant "I procured a Capri Sun from Lucas." Not obtained.

My favorite word, although I don't ever use it, is superfluous and I only like it because it is fun to say. For the longest time I didn't even know what it meant and would randomly say it in sentences hoping noone would notice that I had no idea what it meant, but thannks to Mrs. McAffry I now know the meaning!

My absolute favorite word would have to be "flambouyant"!!!!! Love it! Ever since a spelling test in. . . 4th or 5th grade it's stuck. It means bright, loud (with color),eyecatching, and I have to say i don't like to blend in. Another reason i love this word is that it makes me think of a boat. . .bouyant. . .maybe its just me.

Oh, Mrs. McAff- this is really neat!!!!

My favorite word by far would have to be "flambouyant"!!!! Ever since a. . . 4th or 5th grade spelling test it stuck. .that happens occasionally. It means colorfull, bright, loud etc. I love it cause i'm not one to want to blend in, and because it reminds me of a boat (maybe im alone on that one). Anyway, Mrs. Mcaff- I think this is sooo neat! almost 14 days till CHRISTMAS!!! get excited

My favorite word is unquestionably the word triumpth. For two reasons. One is its definition, to overcome or come out a victor. The second reason is when I say it I get a feeling of being victorous.

Mrs. McAffry, I love this blogspot. Your students are so lucky to have you.

My favorite words are "ragamuffin" and "asinine." Asinine means utterly ridiculous, and it's fun to use if you're just absolutely fed up with something. Ragamuffin is a good word to describe yourself when you woke up a little late and didn't have time to fix your hair just right or you are wearing hand-me-downs that don't fit right.

Another favorite...my home state, Mississippi. Fun to say, fun to spell, fun place to live.

OHHH - this is really cool! Always cool to see such good words, especially when some of them were learned from me! My favorite word...hmmm. I have so many. I guess right now it would be conspirator & let me explain why. It is from Latin word for to breathe, spirare & con- means togther so conspirators are literally people who breathe together, whispering... I know, I am a geek but aren't all Latin & English teachers! Ciao!
